What's the best way to write a CD-RW to make it more compatible with older CD-ROM Drives? I have an old Laptop that cannot seem to read a CD-RW that works fine on a Desktop.

Is there anything I can do to the Nero6 Settings to help compatibility? These are the settings the CD-RW was written with:

- Boot CD-ROM (Floppy Emulation)
- ISO Mode 1
- File System: ISO9960+Joilet
- Disc Name (ISO9960): WinXPSP2
- Disc Name (Joilet): WinXP_Pro_SP2
- Finalise CD = Enabled
- Speed = 10x (CD-RW Disc is 12x MAX, Drive's MAX CD-RW Speed is 32x)
- Write Method: Track-at-once

The only thing I can think of is differant CDRW media.

Well the CD-RW is a "TDK 700MB/80Min 12x High Speed CD-RW".

I have also just tried a "Memorex 800MB/80Min 52x CD-R"

No luck. I always get "Please put a CD-ROM in Drive D:".

Is this Drive just incompatible?

How old is the laptop CD-ROM drive? The older CD-ROM drives won't read ANY CD-Rs or CD-RWs, but I'm not sure what the general cutoff point was. If the CD-ROM drive is less than 12X, you'll probably have problems no matter what burner or media type you use. The old drives don't read the differences in CD-R and CD-RW media because data is burned onto them differently (from what I've read) than commercially prepared CD media. You might have to go with an external CD drive if you really want to read CD-R and CD-RW disks

I have no idea how old it is - all I know is that it is a "Toshiba Satellite Pro 4300 Series (4320 Model)" with a "CD-224E-B" CD-ROM Drive.

I don't know the speed of the drive nor can I find any info on Google (since there seems to be more specific model numbers which are not shown in Task Manager on the Laptop).

I do have an external 4x CD-RW Drive I could use (it's USB), but I doubt this Laptop can boot from a USB Device - and 4x isn't exactly going to get XP Installed in decent speed...

Trouble is, even if I could boot into DOS after formatting the HDD, I still won't be able to get to the External Drive to install XP or copy the files over for later Installation.

I just burned a cdr and my old Compaq P120 read it!
It depends on a lot of factors and it seems to me that if you play around with settings in, for instance, nero, you can find a way to make a cdr that win98 will read, it even points that out in Nero.
Now cdrw are even trickier, better to stick with cdr's they are cheap anyway, why bother with cdrw, unless its for backups and re-written every day or so.
