Make a specific folder private

Two quick questions.

I have successfully setup two PC's (Both XP) via a crossover cable. I have chosen to share my entire D: drive, but I want to make one folder in my D: drive private? When I go into the sharing tab, the option to make the folder private is greyed out. Is there anything I can do to make it so the other client cannot access this particular folder?

Also, when using a crossover cable, can I share a broadband connection? If so, how? I have tried everything I can think of.

Second question first. You need to add a second adapter to one machine and Use Windows' ICS feature, or a third party proxy software, or a hardware router.

For your first question, you need to disable "Use simple file sharing - recommended' in Folder Options under Windows Explorer, Tools. This will enable the security tab for you. It would be best to convert the disk to the NTFS filestore, as your security choices increase greatly. You would then right-click the folder, and under Security set the folder so that only you had permissions to the folder and no other group or user.

Well I guess I'll have to convert it to NTFS, because even when I select "Do not share this folder" it is still accessible across the network.

Anyway, as for the Internet Connection Sharing, I have my DSL modem connected through a USB port, and have the two PC's connected and talking to each other.

I gave the main PC an IP of 192.168.0.1 and installed all the required services, protocols, etc. I then setup ICS, for the guest PC, I set the IP and DNS to set automatically, etc.

The machines are talking to each other, but I can't get the guest machine to access the internet. What am I doing wrong?

You're probably already aware of this, but just in case:

Share level permissions do not apply when a user logs in locally to the machine that contains the share.

If you are using NTFS permissions and you entire drive is shared you might want to consider turning off inheritable permissions at the parent level so you can really lock down the folder.

shaner66 - did you look at the link bcastner provided for internet sharing (ICS)? (if you enable ICS, it sets IP address 192.168.0.1 on host computer and host compuiter then acts as DHCP server).

Likewise - did you disable simplified sharing as bcastner suggested (you should then be able to set up a share on the folder concerned with no access to anybody (deny access). This is only for access to the share ocver the network - as spotLizard mentions, it won't stop somebody logged on locally accessing the folder - you'll need ntfs and setting security access for that.
