Main & ESS server software

I just got to confirm if main server running CM 3.1.1 and ESS running 3.1.2 would work? Is it just like LSP that it should have the same or higher release than that of the main server. Because as if now I'm having problem with the ESS, not able to register on the main server.

Its always advisable to have both sites running the same version.
