hi all..

i have just installed the Mailman RPM that comes with the SuSE CDs, and complete the installation as normal.. i have also installed the SuSE Apache and Exim RPMs, and they are working fine..

i am trying to setup the mailing list using the web interface and its CGI programs.. but i get the error 'Mailman CGI error!!!' when i try to access the files via the browser..

i have googled all day and discovered that Apache needs to run as the gid for which Mailman has been built... now, SuSE has already taken care of all this, and integrated Apache for Mailman.. user is ' and group is 'nogroup' whose ID is 65534, as needed by Mailman..

the problem is i am not getting logging to see exactly which ID Mailman is complaining about.. even with all the logging SuSE has provided, i can't log this error apart from the browser, where a variable, and not the actual ID is printed..

first thing, is there any way i can have additional logging so i can have the actual printed to the syslog?

second, is there something SuSE is missing, that someone else could have captured..?..

all help appreciated..

Did you check the suse technical forums about this? Suse have on occasions badly tested some software packages, or implemented things that would royally mess up regular users ( for example, suse would make every device in suse 8.0 run under scsi emulation and people with 2 cdroms would have to fumble around for a good time to get those working).

You might want to check the mailman doco to find out what this variable is used for, or where is the file that's associated in this mess, and trying a manual tweak.

i've done all that.. unfortunately, when SuSE changed their website to the new one, they also mucked up the very helpful Support Database.. u can't find anything anymore, it's like they wiped it clean..

tough luck, huh!

is the suse knowledgebase, and indeed, they seem to have wiped some stuff from it.

Can you try to force mailman to run as that user in it's own config file (/path/to/mailman.conf) ? Also, modifying the loading sequense for it ( especially if it's setup to startup at boot ) could fix your problem.
