In Exchange manager, under the mailboxes, you have the list of all users and their mailbox sizes and # of items.

In Outlook, if you right click on the Mailbox header and go to Properties and click Folder Size, you get the total size.

Why are these two numbers different? In outlook it says I have 9435k, where Exchange reports 344k. This is a huge problem, because we are trying to determine which is correct and how close we are to the true limit of the DB (prior to running a defrag).

Use windows explorer to correctly guage the size of your exchange databases

The database names are priv1.edb + priv1.stm, ditto the pubs.

That's a massive difference - are you looking at the same mailbox? Is Outlook doing POP retrieval off Exchange?

They should be similar and if anything Exchange should report higher than Outlook.

As Paul says, add up priv.* to get the Exchange store size.

The database size is likely higher than what ESM says, or Outlook says, for that matter. Typically, items in the dumpster don't show up under user stats.

I cannot look at the DB files for the total size if I need to do a defrag, the number is incorrect.

Right now my Mailbox under Outlook says 14025kb, under ESM it says 12,887kb. I made sure that my deleted items was empty. not as great a discrepancy, but one nonetheless.

Thanks everyone.
