Mailbox problem...

Ok a previous employee removed a user from the AD and supposedly from exchange. However, the user still shows in exchange system manager with a red x over the name. I have ran the cleanup agent and had no success. When I right click and select purge I get "The operation cannot be performed because this mailbox was already reconnect to an existing user." ID No: c1038af9. I then tried the reconnect option and got "The operation cannot be performed because this mailbox was already reconnect to an existing user." ID No: c1031731. I have searched for some time and cannot come up with an answer on how to get rid of this mailbox. Does anyone have an idea?
