Hi,

I've just added an Exchange 2003 server to a Exchange 5.5 site. I have two odd problems:

1. I cannot move a mailbox from the 5.5 server to the 2003 server. It looks like it's going to do the move saying "preparing to move mailbox" in the wizard but then fails. In the error report I get

<item adsPath="test" class="user">
<progress code="0" milliseconds="25750">Preparing mailbox to be moved.</progress>
- <summary isWarning="false" errorCode="0xc1041721">
The action could not be completed because the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service is unavailable. Be sure the service is running and you have network connectivity to the Microsoft Exchange Server computer.

Users are still working away fine on the 5.5 server and a test user created on the 2003 box can recieve mail no probs. A search for the errorCode above turns up nothing.

2. This may be related - but could be nothing.
A new user created on the 2003 server with email address testuser1@mydomain.com can recieve mail from users on the 5.5 server, can send mail to users on the 5.5 server and send external mail. A reply to this mail works fine internally but a reply to the external mail fails as the email address looks like a LDAP path or whatever this is:(OU=myorg_OU=mysite_CN=recipients_CN=testuser1@mydomain.com)
I havn't enabled direct outbound SMTP from the 2003 server yet so I't going out through the 5.5 box

Any ideas on the above would be greatly appreciated.

You have Exchange AV turned off on the 5.5 box? Is the 5.5 box at Exchange SP4 yet?

Do you have any 7024 errors on the System event log on either server? Anything else in the App log?

Is this just one particular mailbox you are trying to move, or does trying to move any mailbox give you that error? I'm guessing the latter.

I think that the problem without outbound mail might be normal if you haven't set up a virtual SMTP connector that routes mail out through the 5.5 system.

Thanks for the reply..

It seems I've got it sorted - I found lots of things wrong eventually, permissions on the Exchange 5.5 service account and the like. I have the AV on still - will turn it off.

No update as yet on the outbound email - have to get rid of the silly Lucent Brick firewall before I start letting stuff out from the 2003 box.
