Maybe someone at there could give some insight has to which is the best possible storage solution. Taken in to account backup and performance. Also some users have upwards to 700 megs of stored email. I have read alot of things but none that actual give the best reasons for one over the other.

First of all educate your users, 700MB of enail is rediciclous. If you check, you will find replies to forwards tec. all with the same or newer attachments, remove old an obsolete.
In Mailbox storage, the server can backup and restore all email, including deleted ones.
In a PST, which is on the local PC, mail retrieved is out of your control. If it gets corrupt or deleted, it is lost. If the answer is here, mark it, others can benefit from it too. If 'something' 'somewhere' gives 'some' error, excpect random guesses or no replies at all. Please specify details.

Plus on the server you can set limits as to the size of their mailbox so they can't have a 700 meg mailbox. Our biggest mailbox here is 145 megs. And that's only cause he's the CEO. Just make sure that if you are going to let them have high mailboxes on the server that you have PLENTY of disk space...nothing worse than running out of space.

Well, you can stick PST's onto a server so that it can be backed up. But reasons for keeping it all on mailboxes on exchange databases are many, and to add to those already mentioned by speedracer and marcs41:

Single Instance Storage: Emails sent to multiple users are stored only once in an exchange database - this could potentially save quite a bit of storage!

Security: Mailboxes are more secure, and it is easier to give access to someone's mailbox, if stored on an exchange database.

Recoverability: Even after deletion of messages, folders and even mailboxes, you have better recoverability with exchange databases.

But the death knell to PST's... They are unstable, and easily corrupted, and particularly unstable above 500Mb.

robbyb, although it can of course be done, it is in general not a good idea to put PST's on a server. This will generate loads of traffic since the file is always open. If the answer is here, mark it, others can benefit from it too. If 'something' 'somewhere' gives 'some' error, excpect random guesses or no replies at all. Please specify details.
