I am trying to set up email for my domain. I know how to set up SMTP with win2k server. Will I be able to connect my workstations' outlook to the SMTP server. It seems I need an IMAP or POP3 server for outlook to connect to. Does that mean I need another server???

SMTP is just for sending e-mails to another sever.

you do need another Server to do POP3 or IMAP which most have a SMTP server built in.

Do you need another computer to do this no. just buy the app and stick it on the same computer.

I use a application called Mailgate which is a POP3 and SMTP server. It's effective app but not fancy

does microsoft not build in that application to the server OS? Thats hard to believe if they don't. If not, whats microsoft's "prefferred solution"?

POP3 is not included in the OS, only in MS Exchange
Microsoft's preferred solution is NOT the best solution.
I believe even a cheap small application will do exactly what you want to do...
and if you want to invest in a stable, scalable and FAST environment, have a look a Lotus Domino server...
(and it is even cheaper than M$ Exchange) ---------------------------------------------------------------------
I have not failed, I've just found 10,000 ways that don't work

To my knowledge microsoft does not give away POP3 or IMAP server.

There is not a preffered method to setting up a mail server
outside of (Exchange server very expensive)

Are you looking for

Basic E-mail POP3/SMTP

or

GroupWare services
etc. Exchange Server, Lotus Domino
