Macro crashing Excel

I have a macro that runs application.run someFunctionalityUsingSomeAddin

When the focus is on the Excel window, the code runs fine. When the focus is on another application the Excel session running the macro crashes with a window error.

Is there a way to run the macro and have the focus on any window? I'm thinking along the lines of some kind of protection functionality or something like that...

Any ideas???
