I have a mac os 10 panther desktop, file access to win2k server slow when using appletalk but when using smb it's pretty fast but the drawback to that is the files do not show up as to what program they where created with and cannot open them and when i start classic mac os 9 session i could open the files but the file directory is all screwed up. any help would be appreciated

Thanks

I have not had any problem with OS9 and SMB with the way the directory shows in OS9 myself. On a file being "associated" with a specific program, OS9 files have the association built in to the file. It doesn't base what program it is supposed to open with by extention like OS X and Windows. What you can do is drag the file into the program's icon you want it to open with. For example if you wanted to open it in Photoshop 6, just drag the file over Photoshop icon and let go, it should open the file from the server in photoshop. The next time you save it, it should store the "association" with the program.

Hope that helps.

yes i guess that will work it's just a matter of getting the people using the mac's accustomed to it and also it does not explain why in smb the directory structure it's all screwed up or not in the right format that it should be in , i know in os9 there is no problem is once you have os x that the problems come in thanks

any more suggestions

I had the exact problem with jaguar on my old network -(previous job) and on a win2k server. I never got a chance to track it down as I was offered a job in another state and took it.
Oddly, I have 11 mac users accessing an W2k network using only smb (half Jaguar, half Panther). No AppleTalk at all. The access is faster than pc's. Macs can view the files and the file type as well when viewed as a list.
I can double click any file and open it directly from the server using the default app or drag and drop as mentioned above.
We have no special services running on the servers for the macs since TCP/IP was the only protocol I wanted to use.
The only difference between the two is the current network has no macintosh services running and the previos network did.
