I need to know if there is a LEGAL way to get a MAC address from an IP address - the reason I'm asking is because I need legal verification for electonic signatures that the computer we intended the verification go to is the computer that did the verification - and no PKI is not a feesable option, and yes, we're already recording the IP addresses.

MAC's can be spoofed although it isn't easy to do - so it is not a foolproof validation method.

If the computer is outside your network (the other side of a router) the mac address isn't forwarded. You will have to Telnet to the remote box and look it up or have the remote side report it to you - either manually or you could send them software that would report it to you (there are hacker tools available). However, sane sys admins would never allow it and the manual reporting method doesn't meet your need.

Sorry I don't have any useful info
