Hi everyone,

I have a computer here, your typical IBM p4. It has a peculiar problem. When dialed up to the internet and trying to access any site which requires authentication to enter the site. Lsass.exe crashes and initializes a system shutdown. I've check for viruses with the latest version of AVG antivirus and Mcafee's Stinger.

So to continue I tried connecting the machine to highspeed internet via the NIC card. I had no such problems connecting to the sites I had problems with previously.

Next I will try reinstalling the modem, however for the moment I'm at a loss as to what might cause this problem. Anyone out there run into this?

Run IEFix, and be certain the SFC option is enabled.
Have your XP CD handy.

If no joy results from doing this, do a repair/Upgrade reinstallation of XP.

This does not strike me as a virus issue, but it does sound strongly like a serious issue in your system state.

Have a look at the Winsock Fix in this FAQ.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates (no problem if you substitute them with SP2) but your files and programs will be untouched.

Thanks for the advice, I have my reservations however as IE worked fine with a connection to the internet via LAN.

The problem seems to be specifically related to the modem. As in I only have the problem when I'm dialed up.
