LRE NEWB: Spanning Tree?

Ok, so I understand the CPE is half-duplex, right?
Can I run two CPEs into a managed switch and set one for upstream and the other for downstream? Would I use spanning tree for this? Is the managed switch even necessary or would I get a feedback loop without it? Seems like our bandwidth and speed would improve this way.
