I am going to be deployed for the Army.

I want to setup a file server with the following requirements:
FTP services
simple website w/some flash
Easy to Admin remotely

The hardware is set, but I am not decided on OS or applications to meet the above requirements. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Windows 2003 server would be perfect for this.

Windows 2003 server has Remote Desktop. This allows you to connect to the server through the internet and have a control of the desktop.

You can install IIS on Windows 2003 server. This is free and built-in.

You can enable Frontpage extentions and ASP to make your website fully functional.

You can install FTP on Windows 2003.

So, you basically just need Windows 2003 server OS to be able to do everything.

As an alternative, you could just have your website hosted by a hosting company. Yahoo, for example, can host your website and FTP site. This costs about $12 (US) a month.
You get 2GB's of disk space for your web site...plus up to 25 e-mail addresses too.

man, you are speaking in linux native languaje.. ;o)

linux (may be debian, or Fedora) -- cost $0
apache -- cost $0
vsftp (FTP Server) -- cost $0
Firewall: iptables (included in the kernel) -- cost $0

you don't need to load the X environment, so all CPU and memory is for apache and FTP, not GUI!!
The best thing: OPEN

Cheers.

Just go with what you are accustomed to. If you are used to Windows and have never worked with Linux then stick with Windows. You can do all this (ftp, website and remote admin) with regular Windows XP, you don’t have to have Windows Server. If you are used to Linux or have a good understanding then use that. Either way you could something like remote desktop with Windows or VNC with either Windows or Linux to remote control the computer.

I agree with rye8261, use with what you feel comfortable. Both can do they same job, but if the cost is your issue, linux is free.

The problem with Windows XP (only XP!! not W2K nor W2K3) is the maximum concurrent connections, just 5 if I remember well!?

beware with that.
