lots of different SMTP queues, a problem?

I'm trying to determine if there is something going on our network. When I look at the list of queues in the default SMPT virtual server there are a ton listed. Most of the entries look like this:

SmallBusiness SMTP connector - thome.palkiss.net (SMTP Connector - Remote delivery)

There are currently 489 queues. Most of them have a connection state of "retry". The first thing we noticed that was strange was our multi fuction machine (fax/copy/scan/print) appeared to be trying to send emails (it has the ability to send emails when you scan something).

Is there something going on here?
