I have an unusual problem with my PC at the moment. When I right click my computer and select open or explore, the whole desktop goes blank, including the taskbar (Just leaves coloured background) for about 3 seconds, then it all reappears. But no explorer view. The same thing happens when I go to start/settings/control panel and select control panel. If I am using another application that uses explorer view I have no problem viewing explorer thru that. I have always had up to date virus data, and nortons antivirus and norton windoctor show no problems after a scan. Very strange. The rest of the prorams on the desktop all launch as they should. hoping someone may have an idea as to whats causing this. Cheers Chris

When the explorer is clicked via myComputer... The search is made on all posibile locations such as C: d: e: etc harddisks, CD drives and Zip Drives whatever. If any of the drives contents are slow in the refresh, the window goes blank for that much time.

So do you have any CD or specific Zip cartridge in the drive. If you remove it, this can clear.

Also if there is a driver clash (normally.. Bus Master IDEs clash with some CD drives..) can make the CD not available and at that stage also, the same freeze can take place.

If your system is getting older.. probably.. the CPU cooling Fan or The power supply Fan might have failed. This makes the drives not readably as the beginning of your trouble (and this makes the freeze) and soon you could get into bigger trouble. So sorting out now is better.

Hope this helps :) ramani :-9

Thanks for your reply. I have found the problem, its a corrupt .cpl file in the winnt\system32 folder. MS advises to remove them all from the folder and relaunch control panel and add them back in 1 by 1 launching control panel each time. Problem is as my explorer view is not working I carnt get to the files, as my start/find files is doing the same as well...cheers Chris
