Hi, Experts,

I have an ultra-1 (solaris 8) and a pc (w2k) at home. They are connected through a linksys router. Both of them can surf the internet fine (such as cnn.com) and both of them can ping the router (192.168.1.1). However, I can not ping the ultra-1 from my pc, neither can I telnet/ftp to the ultra-1 from my pc.

I set up the home system couple years ago and constantly telnet/ftp to the sun box from my pc. I have never had any problems at all before. However, I just can not ping/telnet/ftp this baby tonight. How strange it is! Could someone tell me what's wrong with it? Thanks!

Run a snoop on your Ultra-1 to see if the ftp call is being seen.

Thank you for your post.

I am not familiar with this command 'snoop'. Could please tell me a little more how to use this command? Do I need pass any arguments?

Anyway, I'll try it tonight. Thanks again.

Not really if your PC and Ultra-1 are the only boxes on your network.

On you Ultra-1, as root, start "snoop <Ultra-1 nodename>". You can use the Ultra's IP address if you wish.

On your PC, start a FTP session to the Ultra-1 via the command window.

You should see something like:

<PC Name> ---> <Ultra nodename> FTP C port=<port number>
<Ultra nodename> ---> <PC Name> FTP R port=<port number>

This is the initial 2 way communication for a FTP session.

If you get through the initial communication, enter your Ultra-1 username and password. You should see both username and password as ascii text (The reason why FTP is not very secure). If the FTP connection is refused by the Ultra-1, you should see that message also. If this is the case, we can go further to see why the FTP connection is refused.

Thank you for your help. I have found out why I lost connection. My router is a 4-port router. However, last night I was using both port one and uplink port which can not be used at the same time - I simply forgot that!

However, I still learnt something from your post. Again, thank you very much.
