Lost CDROM

One day the CDROM is there, the next, when attempting to play a music CD (the same as the day before)I'm notified that there is no CD loaded.

A check of the System from the control panel shows no CDROM

I've been to the DELTA website and downloaded drivers and installed but no luck.

Loaded the Windows 98 diskette but no luck. Where the heck has it gone?

Thinking of simply installing a new CDROM in it's place
 
on bootup can you see that the device had been detected on the ide controller.

if you find the device on bootup. then there is no problem with the connections inside. ie ide cable is connected to m/board and cdrom.
