So, in testing... I somehow lost the ability to look up hostnames. I can do reverse DNS entries just fine, but all my hostname lookups are failing. I haven't really changed anything that I remember. Any thoughts as to what this can be?

The A records still do exist..

C:\Users\dmurphy>nslookup 10.64.3.104
Server: dnstestsrv.istest.com
Address: 10.65.2.34:53

Name: testmcaffee5.istest.com
Address: 10.64.3.104

C:\Users\dmurphy>nslookup testmcafee5
Server: dnstestsrv.istest.com
Address: 10.65.2.34:53

*** dnstestsrv.istest.com can't find testmcafee5: Non-existent domain

Check that Server:

dnstestsrv.istest.com
Address: 10.65.2.34:53

is authoritative for the domain itest.com.
or at least can get to the expected auth server:

also that itest.com is in your search path, easily checked
by entering the fully qualified name (instead of letting
the search path take care of it).

im wondering if somehow I lost the authoritativeness? Is that possible when the DC is the same as the DNS server. 10.65.2.34 is the domain controller for istest.com So I'm not sure how it could lose authorization for itself.. one thing that is interesting is, if I nslookup to a machine outside of that domain(and dns server), it does resolve, but it no longer says non-authoritative answer like it used to(since it is a fwd request to another name server)

C:\Users\dmurphy>nslookup waltham-fs2
Server: dnstestsrv.istest.com
Address: 10.65.2.34:53

Name: waltham-fs2.boston.amer.iona.com
Address: 10.65.6.38

C:\Users\dmurphy>

Try
nslookup waltham-fs2.istest.com (or anything you know is in istest.com.

does ipconfig /all list istest.com in the DNS Suffix Search list?

the issue ended up being a misspelling of a host name.. silly me...
