Loss of music when scanning or printing

I have dual Athlon 1.6GB processors and 1GB DDR RAM, and whenever I use the printer or scanner while playing music through my CD-RW, the music gets interrupted and plays intermittently. Is this a resource conflict? How can I not have enough resources?!? Any suggestions on settings that a slightly above-average user can safely change would be appreciated. I have administrative privileges. I appreciate any help.
