One of our domains is experiencing browsing difficulties. If you click on the domain in Network Neighborhood, it shows the PDC server but does not any of our 20 client machines. It was working properly last week!

I can ping machine names so WINS seems to be resolving properly.

Does anyone have any ideas on what could be causing this problem.

Regards

do you have NetBUEI protocol installed on all the client machines ?

In addition to what Redhook01 mentioned, check the following:

1. If you are using DHCP, make sure that the server is giving the proper name server IPs

2. Check that all the machines has correct IP addresses in the lmhosts and host files (To ease this process, what I would do is copy a blank lmhost and host file to the winlogon directory and use a logon script to copy it to the systemroot\system32\drivers\etc folder of each machine and configure every one to use WINS. This will erase any manual configuration done to these files and make sure that every one is using the server for name resolution.

3. Make sure that the DHCP server is configuring every one to use WINS as a hybrid. If I remember correctly, this is DHCP item either 40 or 44 and the code should be 0x8

4. Change all the Network card binding to use TCP/IP first instead of any other protocol

Hope this helps,

Hello GlobalStrata,

I have a similar problem. And have noticed that PC's running as Hybrid are OK but those running as Mixed mode are not good!

Our IP addresses are statically assigned and each machine has two IP addresses (192.168.0.x mask 255.255.255.0 & 141.92.1.x mask 255.255.0.0) Default gateway (to the internet 192.168.0.51

Can you explain how I can make my machines all run in Hybrid mode please?

I was here until gone 1am last night but still not resolved this!

Thanks

Peter (Sorry if I'm hijacking this thread :))

Don't worry now thanks - I've just figured it out from what GlobalStata said above.

Thanks anyway (Have a star because I found your reply helpful)
