my users keep losing connectivity and the only way to get back on the network is to reboot for my 98 users.

I thought it was bec. the distance between my two hubs was to far so I ran fiber between the two. But didn't fix the problem. what else could it be? Do you think I need a switch instead of the hub? I know it will decrease network traffic but will it fix my problem?

Do you lose all connectivity (internet and intranet)? Static IP's or DHCP? Many users at once, or one at a time?

They still have internet access, but they cannot browse our domain. They get access denied. It happens to about 4 users on the 24 port hub. 3 are 98 users, and the 4th one had 98 with no problems and as soon as he got his 2000 machine it started happpening to him. As far as I can tell they are not happening all users at the same time. any help appreciated

OK, that helps. So they're not actually losing their IP information, just local domain gets lost...I wouldn't think that's a hub problem, but let's not rule it out for now. What servers are these machine using for DNS?

Well we use a 2000 server. But we are using dhcp to hand out the dns address of our isp. we not using the 2000 dns I don't beleive. We using wins.

Hi,

There is a bug in the vredir.vxd.. which can caused access denied on Windows 98 client connecting to Windows 2000 servers.

Thanks for that bas95, hopefully it's helpful. If not, I have a couple more questions...are all your servers 2K? Do you have a DNS server set up for the 2K domain? How many WINS servers? It's possible that one may have a corrupt table...

I only have the one 2000 server. It is running wins and dns, but we don't use the dns server at all. In my clients ip settings we don't specify the 2000 server as the dns server.

Were using wins for name resolution. I can stop the dns service and we'll function fine. You think maybee I need to start using dns? but again, its mostly 98 machines with the issue and they use wins, correct?

corrupt tables? Wouldn't that affect everyone rather than the same 4 users every day?

Yes, they prefer WINS, but it's possible that DNS is the issue since you're dealing with a 2K server, especially in light of the fact that you now have a 2K workstation that's experiencing the same problem. Here's what you should do: Assuming that your 2K server has DNS working properly, you should point all your client workstations to it for DNS resolution, then allow the 2K server to "forward" out to your ISP's DNS server for internet name resolution. Let me know if you have questions....

When your 98 users get hosed, can you do a route print and see what you get? Glen A. Johnson

how do i get in touch with you, just reply to this thread?

so if I do it that way my clients should have the dns address of the 2000 server rather than the isp dns server, correct? Also, wins should be updating into dns if i have it set up right, correct?

Yes, your clients would have the 2000 server's IP in their NIC properties for DNS. As for the second question, you can set the 2K DNS server to forward out to WINS if it's asked for an internal address that's not resolvable....
