Simple XP peer to peer network - no server, Netgear DG834 - No WiFi router with DHCP server doing 192.168.0.1 to .150 Router then on 241
About 8 machines on it Been going for over a year. 2-3 year old Sony laptop suddenly No Internet and no printers. Do all the normal things on it, Firewalls off, IPCONFIG, delete setting and reboot but nothing changes, try another laptop on the cable -- OK put original one back and out of desperation change it from DHCP to fixed IP All worked Internet, Printers, Shares instantly.
Anyone any idea what or why?

Set back to DHCP setting and run this:

Are the activity lights on the network card flashing/lighting?

Can you ping the router?
Can you ping google.com?
Can you ping google.com via IP address?

If none of the above works, then start thinking about malware or a dead network card.

It works perfectly OK with fixed IP It's just DHCP that doesn't and it has to be that laptop as another one is OK and just swapping from DHCP to fixed, no other changes whatsoever, work And if you switch it back to DHCP it still doesn't. Only fixed works and then everything goes just as it should.

I usually do IPreset first, then winsock fix, both using the netsh version.

On the last one, a couple of days ago, it took NEBBEUI to get things visible. This was something I used regularly at W95 and W98 but had forgotten about.

I must have missed that a static ip address works. Run the winsockxpfix or do it manually, but the former is quick and easy.

Have you done malware scans to make sure the system is clean? In order then, rebooting as required between each.
