I've just this second checked ebay and there are loads. I'd try again if I were you Peter Meachem

i searched for "office AND 97 AND developer" with no luck.. hmm.. let me check again

Did you try a search at ? I found two hits saying they had it, but then could find a match there. Other than that, a lot of Pro editions, but not the Dev edition....

Good Luck... Terry M. Hoey

My mistake, lots of pro. I just lookd for 'office 97'. What's in the developer one that isn't in pro? It's not just that awful Access runtime is it? Peter Meachem

Unfortunately, Yes I do need the runtime distribution. I developed a database in Access 97 that has loads of problems converting to 2000, so I'd like to save trouble and distribute it so everyone can use it regardless. I welcome any better suggestions, but when I convert it to 2000 it needs to recompile after every action and is really slow..

I could never get the Access setup wizard to work properly, not from a customer's point of view anyway. I think there was some problem with comcat.dll, I forget. Access 2000 is dreadfully slow, awful thing.

I've just converted a programme from Access 97 to VB. It wasn't too hard, doing the reports in Crystal was the worst, and getting Crystal to install. The performance is way better than on Access. Customer happy, and more dosh for me (that's money for non-UK people) Peter Meachem

What ever you do, don't, and I mean DON'T EVER use the M/S runtime wizard for run time distribution. It has more bugs in it than a termite farm. It crashes on NT because of a comcat.dll problem, won't load on a system that has A2K on it, won't load on a system that has Access 95 on it either. Use either WISE or InstallShield. The scripts for installation under these programs are available from in Penticton, B.C. I've been using Sagekey stuff for years and have hundreds of runtime Access installations in N. & S. America, Asia, Europe, Africa, Australia and even Greenland. If an Eskimo in Greenland can make it work you're probably safe in the rest of the world.

There is no advantage to working in A2K unless you're developing for upsizing to SQL Server or just want to run ADP under MSDE. The differences between Jet 3.6 in A97 and Jet 4.0 in A2K are merely cosmetic. A2K files are bigger, slower, and more difficult to work with. MSDE doesn't support user level security so if you want to secure your application tables, as I need to do, then you better stick to A97.

I haven't tried the developer installation under A2K and so can only shudder at the possibility.

Shawn - contact me direct at avdata@wave.net. I know where you can get 97 Developer cheap, but I don't want to advertise it over the web.
