I'm running XP pro SP2 on a Gateway M675 laptop. It takes over 3 1/2 minutes from the time I press the power button until the system is ready to do any apps or net connections. Also when I shut down it takes almost 4 min. to a complete powerdown.

I have Symantec Antivirus defs current, and have run AdAware SE and Spybot S&D sweeps. Are there any process names I should look for in Task Mgr that might be some the culprit

Any ideas?

If you have more than one network adapter, disable the unused adapter.

I have an 802.11g miniPCI card, besides the built-in ethernet adapter, but the 11g is disabled (only use when near a hotspot).

I downloaded and ran the MS Hive cleanup SW but it seems to have had no effect still takes 4 min to boot fully.

It seems like it is processing something then at about 3.5 min into bootup it finishes up

Test by booting to Safe Mode (hit the F8 key early and often when the system starts), or use MSCONFIG to disable all startup programs. If there is no startup lag, and the system shutsdown, it narrows your focus to either a non-SP2 compliant startup program or device driver, or possibly a service.

You then do a divide and conquer to isolate the problems: enable half the startup programs. Do the problems repeat? If so enable half of the half set of programs and reboot and test. At some point you should be able to isolate the troublesome program.

I went to msconfig and set for "Diagnostic" start, no startup items. But now the system won't start. It hung on the initial part but never got to the login screen.

I had to use the WinXP pro disk to attempt a repair but now goes thru login but no icons or system tray appears . Hitting the F8 key only brings me to the F1/F2 Bios setup area F1 for continue or F2 to "set-up". Is there a key shortcut sequence when powering on that accomplishes a safe boot or no start up items boot?

I am on another machine at home, will check in later

XP looks for mapped drives before it starts anything...a big problem, disconnect all your mapped drives and then add them one by one to find the offending mapping(if any. THEN disable services such as 'THEMES' and 'MESSENGER" as they are not needed and it will make you system sing. There are good sites available that will advise what services you can disable. 'WinXP H and Pro Services Config' search
