Hi there!

Where I double click on MY COMPUTER in Win98 SE, the pc pauses about 30 seconds before it shows the window. In the meantime, I can open other apps, and everything works fine. This started about 2 days ago. The day before that started, I noticed, when I clicked on the IE icon, it would pause before opening. That went away and the problem seems to have moved to MY COMPUTER. I did a complete scandisk and defrag to no avail. Any ideas? Otherwise everything works just fine.

Thanks!

Hi,

Have you added anything or changed something, or deleted something within the past few days?

Try booting to DOS mode START|SHUTDOWN|RESTART IN MS-DOS MODE then at the DOS prompt type:
SCANREG /RESTORE
then restore to a date that this wasn't happening. You need to act fast b/c if you wait another day you won't be able to do this to get a well working registry b/c SCANREG only saves the past 5 days I believe it is.

Hope this helps! NATE

First of all check it isn't something silly like you have a CD in the CD drive. My Computer has to get all the info about the drives before it can open, if you have a Cd in the drive it will have to spin up and be read.

Another thing to look at is, have you setup a network or installed a network card. IE (which is used to display everything in Win98, including My Computer) fist checks for a network before checking the local PC.

You can try going to the below registry key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RemoteComputer\NameSpace

In the right pane highlight the {D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF} Value and delete it: right-click on it, select Delete, click OK.

New Zealand, a great place to live.

I haven't added anything recently and yes, it is networked to another pc, but it's been that way for months and this has just started.

It seems to be taking turns. One time MY COMPUTER will load slow, and the next reboot, IE will do it. Never both at the same time. Very strange.

Thanks for the help!

I have the identical problem. I`ve been putting up with it for weeks so I`m sure it`s too late to do a scanreg/restore. I have My Computer set up to go into Explorer mode on double-click, and it usually takes around 30 secs. You can hear the floppy drive being checked, then the CD drive, until finally it displays the window, with the added quirk that sometimes, not always, it will show a curtailed list of contents, stopping in the middle. It takes F5 to bring up a complete listing. I`ve done an SFC, but it didn`t show explorer.exe as being corrupted, or anything else. Also checked for viruses or worms, etc. (BTW if I open My Computer in normal view there`s no delay whatsoever, or curtailment, so I guess it has something to do with explorer.exe.)

Ok, more clues.....

If I right click on MY COMPUTER and choose EXPLORE, it'll open right away. If I double click on it, it'll pause for about a minute first. If I try to open IE, it'll pause for a minute, but if I click on IE, then do it again, it'll open right away and then open the first instance in about a minute.

Make any sense? Sure as heck doesn't to me LOL!
