I have 2 95 computers I am working on and I am going out on the network on a server to a folder that is longer than 12 charactors. In the folder there is a database that is longer than the 8.3 naming. One of the 95 machines can get to it and see it and one cannot. I think I remember there is some files I must upgrade to get this to work but I forget what ones. Anyone know what they are or what to do to get the other one to work?

Are both Win95 machines running the exact same version of windows? I think both have to be running version OSR2 or later to bypass this long filename problem. Do you know what filesystem the server is using - FAT16 or FAT32?

The file format they are tring to reach is on NTFS. The one not working is running 95a and the one working is running 95b. I know a rebuild would fix it but I need a quick fix or update. The machine will be replaced shorly with a Windows 2000 machine but there may be a few like this. It is something that will be needed plant wide so a rebuild will not do because it will take to much time and work.

As far as I know, Win95a is limited to the FAT16 filename system. It can access FAT32 drives, but cannot use their naming convention. NTFS is not viewable to Win9x operating systems. They can only access FAT16 or FAT32 drives. Win95b is considered OSR2 which has the ability to use the long filenaming system of FAT32.

There may be a way around it that I'm not aware of, but I'm pretty sure that your only option is to upgrade the OS.

Let me know what you find...
