am experiencing a long boot up time (90 secs), waits at blue desktop screen (no icon's) on a Win2k ICS PC when a 3Com 10 baseT hub is connected. It has one AMD NIC and one Intel NIC.
If no hub is connected then the boot up is fine
If the hub is connected and another PC connected to the hub is on then the boot is fine.

The problem only occurs if the hub is switched on and the other PC's connected to the hub are switched off.

The other PC's are Win98SE

It has been suggested to me that it may be a browse master problem.

Any help apprecited.

It might help to create a LM host file on your pc. If you have mapped drives, try connecting to them w/ a IP address instead of a name.

It could be a browse master issue. I may be off on this so bare with me. Seems like the 2K system when not connected has no reason to announce its presence. As soon as the hub is turned on it will announce its presence and start an election and wait for a responce. It may hang until it gets a responce or times out. If another PC is connected it will get its responce and continue on. James Collins

Sorry hit submit before I finished. Have you tried disabling the Browse master? James Collins

I believe it's as simple as going into your services manager and disabling the service...

You dont want to disable the service. Beacuse this causes other needed services to stop as well. You want to stop it not disable. I am unsure if this will stop the browse elections or not. Never tried. James Collins

OK, I didn't remember there being any necessary dependencies... Perhaps you can stop it and then set it to manual, so that if the other services need it they can prompt it to be started...

That might also prompt elections, though... Hmm...

Another question in my mind, though, is that I've booted up Windows 2000 computers connected to an empty, active hub before and not experienced the sort of extreme delays described above. I would be interested to know if the PC's event log shows any particular entries, e.g. related to browse-master election, around the time of boot-up.

I have not experienced the delays either. I am unsure of why a Windows 2000 Pro machine would be requesting elections. I would like to also know what is in the Event Viewer. James Collins

Thanks for your input, I will check the event viewer and repost the results when I get access to the PC
