IS-IT--Management
Hello, let me describe my network. I have one Server 2003 DC which also is the Exchange server. I also have another 2003 member server which is a mail gateway, and I have a Windows 2000 SQL server. I have about 30 clients on the local LAN, a mix of NT and XP machines. I have 30 remote sites which are across a Sonicwall VPN. At each site there are 2 XP machines which are not domain members, and there is an XP (SP2) machine which is a domain member. This network has been up and running for several months working flawlessly, but since last Saturday we have started to see a problem.
The domain member computers at the remote sites are having trouble accessing network resources. Logging on takes forever if it works at all. If you do get logged in and try to access resources such as mapped drives, your attempt will fail. Outlook clients fail to connect to the Exchange server. The event log on the client presents error 1054; "Windows cannot obtain the domain controller name for your network. Group policy processing aborted."
I should point out that rebooting the DC clears up the problem, but the problem returns in about 12 hours. The only change I have made was to install several Windows Update patches last week. I installed KB842773, KB890859, KB893086, KB893066 and KB890923. I installed these files last Wednesday, but I did not reboot the server until Saturday evening. The 1054 error on the clients started Sunday and users started complaing Monday morning. I don't suspect there was much usage on Sunday.
There does not seem to be any problem for clients on the LAN, only WAN clients. I have run DCDIAG and no errors were reported.
