Hi there!
Here is my scenario:
I log on to the domain from a Win2KPro workstation (SP3). Both the PDC and the BDC is WinNT 4.0 with SP6 and SP5 resp. I logon with the domain admin account. So far so good. When I point to the neighbourhood browser and want to browse the BDC's shares, I am prompted for userid and password. I can see the shares on the PDC and all the other servers/workstations.

I try this out from another W2K workstation with SP3, but here the logon and the browsing is all successfull. I have reinstalled SP3 with no help. I have removed the computer name from the domain and then reestablished the account (also with another computername). Tried to change SID. All with same result.

I have also tried the registry setting
HK_LM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NetBT\Parameters
MaxDgramBuffering = 256 KB.
Ref:
When logon:
The BDC reports eventid 537 with logon type 3.

The workstation reports eventid 5719, but not all the time.

- We use no WINS and static IP.
- The domain admin. used has no logon-script.
- Did also added NetBEUI on the workstation.

and now it's your turn, you experts! I hope I haven't forgot some information...

Just to clarify, when you attempt to browse the PDC, you are successful, and when you try to browse the BDC you get an error?
Also from another w2kpro machine, using the same domain admin account, everything runs fine.

So there's a problem with the machine.

Event ID 5719 is a NETLOGON error....no domain controllers are available.
Event ID on the server....I'm not so sure these two are related, and if they are they most likely center around the NETLOGON problem.

Make sure all the TCP/IP settings are identical to the functional 2k machine. I know it might be a simple thing to say, but even experts make silly mistakes. Check it out, do a "stare and compare" on the IP settings.

Check that out, and let us know what you come up with.

Hope this helps!

Thank you for taking the time to answer.

- Correct.

Yes, I also clarify this is a workstation problem. But I have spend hours to test and try, so I want to move on with the rest of the installation. I hoped I could be let off starting all over again. You see, the ws was functioning very well last week. It was this week I got this error.

I did verify the tcpip-settings, but of course, I could be wrong!
I will do a new check/compare when I arrive office tomorrow.

I have done several logon today. First I got the ws event id 5719. Later it didn't show up any more, but the BDC reported eventid 537 every time I logged on. It says:
Logon Failure: An unexpected error occurred during logon
It also says Logon Type 3: Network.

Could there be something wrong with the security device driver (ksecdd)? I don't know myself!
But the Q is why do I only miss the shares on this one server (BDC) and not the others?

I will continue looking around...

Kjell

Sorry for this delay!
I compared the two workstations today and they are identical, so it isn't wrong tcpip-settings that are causing the error.

If anybody come up with some good tips, let me know!!

Kjell

Honestly it sounds like a network problem. The fact that you can access the PDC though is very puzzling. Do you have anything in the hosts file or the lmhosts file that might be pointing to the PDC, and that's why you can access it and not the BDC? Does the other machine have something in those two files that the other machine does not?

Just some ideas, as this issue seems very odd. Worst case scenario....dare I say it? Rebuild the client.
