I have a stand alone windows 2000 server (it has not been promoted to domain controller). I have several Win XP Home clients that give the "logon failure: account currently disabled" error. However, I have only had this since having to rebuild the server. I had to rebuild it due to something I installed and tehn removed but it didnt remove successful. Its on a home network so it not a huge issue to rebuild. The logon is not disabled, and the advice given "You will have to create local accounts and assign rights for the workgroup XP system. Domain members cannot pass rights to a workgroup peer" is insufficient to be able to rectify the issue that I never used to have.

If you are sharing resources on a standalone box, with Windows XP Home clients attempting to connect to the resources, the users will need to have local user accounts on the Windows Server box itself. If there is no domain, there cannot be any centralized management of your resources, users, machine, etc...

Hope This Helps,

Good Luck!

There are accounts on the local machine, that is what makes it more perplexing

It may not be wise to say this, but I dont use them... they are all my pc's and so I have no need for passwords
