Hello
I've installed internet Explorer 7 on a Windows 2003 server and now I can't logoff/shutdown or reboot the server. I can remote to it from another PC and logoff/restart that way however. I can logoff using the Task manager. Its more an inconveinance than anything else. Microsoft had me uninstalled Symantec Antivirus, but this did not solve the problem. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Thanks in Advance

Never heard of this. What is you remove IE7.

From the server its self you can go to a cmd prompt and type shutdown.exe and you can reboot restart that way.

Check task manager for Internet Explorer executable...then "End Task" the program.

See if that works. Otherwise, if the shutdown doesn't work or the Start | Shutdown...then go into the services.msc and turn off any critical services (ie. SQL if it is running it) or any other non-standard services and the hard boot it.

Do the event logs say anything prior to the reboot and after?

The only warning we get is this on below:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: USER32
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1073
Date: 11/24/2006
Time: 9:00:59 AM

Do you have a security template applied to the server? This may be affecting the shutdown process if it is too restrictive. I'm wondering if IE7 somehow applied a security setting that is unfavorable.

Here's a workaround from MS:
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, remove the NTLM version 2 (NTLMv2) requirement from the security policies. To do this, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Domain Security Policy.
2. Expand the Local Policies subtree, and then click Security Options.
3. Double-click Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC) clients.
4. Click to clear the Require NTLMv2 session security check box, and then click OK.
5. Double-click Network security: Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC) servers.
6. Click to clear the Require NTLMv2 session security check box, and then click OK.

Hope This Helps,

Good Luck!

Those settings are already set to undefined.

Thanks for your reply, however.

Exact same thing is happening with my Win 2003 server; so far have not found any solution either. None of the suggestions todate have worked for me...

Things I've tried:

1. uninstall symantec
2. uninstall ie7
3. suggestions as described in this thread

I am suspicious about IE7 being the culprit at this point as this is the ONLY new app I've installed since problem as become apparent. However, uninstalling it does not work...so unless it leaves behind fragments after uninstall I have nothing to go on at this point.

Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
