I have 4 domain workstations, XP Pro SP2, that will not logoff. If you press Ctl-Alt-Del and then logoff, nothing happens. If you go to Start, Shut Down, and Logoff, still nothing happens.

The only options I've had are for users to hard boot the systems to get the previous user off of the system or they can lock the workstation and then unlock the system with their id, the users are all local admins so this option does work.

I've never seen this behavior, anybody have any ideas?

Is there any thing running the in the task manager that preventing the logging off process?

Could you check for that!

Also check the event viewer for errors while logging off! There must be something stopping the process!

Regards,
Khalid

Do you see the same behavior from Safe Mode?

Anything showing up in the Event Viewer?

This talks about corrupt Profiles and a bit more.

XP Freeze's after logoff

One thing you could do to get the machine rebooted without doing a hard reset whilst you continue to troubleshoot is to use the command shutdown.

If you go to a dos prompt type in shutdown /? it will give you all the switches and enable you to shut the machine down. If on a network this can be done from another machine as long as you know the machine name etc.

It doesn't resolve the issue you are having, but its better for the hardware and profile settings to log off this way.
