I need to be able to recognize the PC I'm on at work quick so I would like to have the computer name as my desktop background and also when I log off! I had once seen this done at an office and I know they weren't using any utility like BGInfo. Can anyone help...I would like to do this within windows with no 3rd party software.

Set the screen saver to Marquee and set the Text string appropriately?

You can then always use Display Properties, Screensaver, Preview.

Second approach: create a custom wallpaper. (And, perhpas a custom screensaver).
This is relatively easy to do. Google this.

Now the question is what you mean when "I would like to have the computer name as my desktop background and also when I log off!"

You need to distinguish between the screensaver state, and the background/wallpaper state. Display Properties will control the screensaver settings.

For the latter, the default background wallpaper at logon and logoff is set in the registry here:

System Key: [HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop]
Value Name: Wallpaper
Data Type: REG_SZ (String Value)
This should point to a saved .BMP file on the local computer. Modify the value of 'Wallpaper' to equal the path and filename of the bitmap (BMP) file you want to use as the background (e.g. 'c:\windows\mylogo.bmp'}.

You may be able to make use of the text you can enter in the Computer Description box under System Properties/ Computer Name.
