login-Lgnwnt32.dll-NMAS attribute not found

I have 2 people in my area that are having issues with Novell login. They are running Windows XP sp2. with Novell client 4.92. When this person trys to login to Novell that get an error message that there "grace logins have expired and they need to change their password". They then get the new password screen to change the password, but when they they hit OK to change they then get this error "login-Lgnwnt32.dll-NMAS attribute not found. Hit yes to change password or No" If they hit yes to change it starts then back to the process of changing. If they hit no it lets them into Windows with full login and scripts running.

I have tried several patched from novell and the Novell Admins have recreated the password several times with no fix. I though can login into their PC with no error messages. Any ideas I have suggested to the Admins to blow away there profile in Novell and create a new one. Help
 
Since your thread is in the NW3 forum, I am assuming your users are connecting to a Netware 3 server. Since NMAS an authentication component of NW5 and higher, is it possible it is trying to use NMAS. I think during client installation there is an option to use it. It may be a bit drastic but have you tried re-installing the client with NMAS disabled?
 
even better, go into you Add/Remove programs and just uninstall it. No silly config changes really need to be made.


BTW, if NMAS is not avilable on the server, it should not be causing you any issues with a 3.x server. This is because NMAS operates over TCP, and well, 3.x server only operate over IPX. I think your issue is really somthing else .... tell me, are you using WinXP Home or WinXP Pro?

Silly?

I've seen this problem with newer clients and older servers that don't have or use NMAS. I think it's a bug in the client but it would be very difficult and not really worth it to try to prove.

I've seen it as well, it is a bug. The bug is called Windows XP Home Edition. Doesn't play nice with the Novell client, because of this (and the fact Home edition is for, well ... home, not a business) Novell does not support Home Edition connected to a Novell network of any version.

The only other time I have seen it is due to a workstation that should be fdisked anyway because the registry is wacked or it's been spyware infested or the umteen million other things that go wrong with Win PC that do the same thing day in and day out. Since most IT department do not have a good imaging solution inplace (that is until Marvin or I visit them [bigcheeks])the option to reload the PC scares most. So it is easier to just tell them to uninstall the NMAS client if there is no use (as in this case) for the NMAS client. No need to reload the NetWare client, no need to reconfigure the NetWare client.

However, keep in mind that Novell releases the client to work in 99% of the networks in teh world. It is traffic heavy by design with all nameing resolution options and network conectivity options enabled. IT departments are EXPECTED to configure their clients for their networks, but do they NOOOOOO. They just complain about the client messing up their PC or the NetWare servers being slow yada yada yada (think you know what I've been dealing with today Marv?)

Once you go into the client properties and turn things off like the silly ping every gosh darn second to every darn server across the entire tree, things really speed up A LOT. There are many more features, just go through them a refine them for what works for your network, then package them and deploy them in an ACU.
