Hi,

I'm very new to the Unix administration. Lately, I setup a modem to the server. I managed to login to the server (HPUX 10.20.) via the modem.

I've got 2 questions :

1) If the telephone line connected to the modem is faulty, can I still connect to the server thru the ISP. Meaning that I will login to the ISP and do a telnet to my server.
Is this method possible and if it is , appreciate if anyone could provide me a detailed guidelines on doing it.

2) I understand that there is a dial-up password option. From man dialups, two files will be used for this purpose ie /etc/d_passwd and /etc/dialups. How do I go about in doing this coz I am tring to setup another layer (dialup password)prompt whenever user is trying to telnet to the server via modem.

Apologise for this lengthy questionaires, really appreciate all the response that I could get.

Most likely, your network people have a firewall up, which will prevent you from getting access from your ISP. So, for your first question, the answer is no, but you can make it into a "yes" if your network people have opened port 23 into the firewall. Trust me - they won't.

On question 2

It has been too long since I admin'd an HP system. Perhaps someone else can help.

Good luck, Bill.
