Can anyone tell me why my windows XP machine takes ages to log onto a win2k domain. I have win 95 and 98 machines which are far quicker. I have given machines a static IP address i thought this may speed things up. I am not using a roaming profile or logon scripts.

cheers guys

Paul

Also most likely a DNS issue. Can you describe your DNS setup for the domain and local NIC?

i am not using DNS

XP likes DNS in a domain environment. If you want to speed up those logins, you'll need to set it up. I can't imagine how you've survived without it, unless you only have a couple of servers and 9x clients?

exactly, we only have 95 and 98 clients at the moment and one other server

yeah, then you've been surviving on broadcasts...if you set up DNS, you'll see a notable difference in XP's login speed.

I have two diffrent XP boxes logging into 2 diffrent W2K domains. One is very slow, the other is very quick. The one that is slow is that way because the server is an old machine, but with the newest service pack it logs in a little faster now.

It can depend on the server that is the W2K DC and how your domain is setup (DHCP, etc).

But, to have a W2K domain you have to be using DNS, make sure your XP machine is getting the DNS address from DHCP. CJ

If you don't want to setup DNS you can add the NetBEUI protocol to your XP machines. This will eliminate the need for DNS. The protocol is not available by default but you can add it from the valueadd folder of the CD.

cheers for your help guys,

I have configured DNS and am running DHCP now.

i also installed the latest service pack.

Its the fastest machine on the network!!

cheers
