Looking for a way to logoff our users when our nightly backup starts at 02:00 and prevent people from logging on too until the backup finishes at 03:00ish.

You could limit there account so that they can't log in from 2-3am.

Any reason that you want to kick them out when doing the backup?

That means setting it for every single user won't it?

Firstly they complain of slowdown's and secondly and most vitally, some of our accounts software databases won't backup if they are open.

You should be able to apply this via a GPO on an OU.

If you turn on Shadow Copy on the database files directory (I'm assuming MS Access here) the Shadow Copy will make a copy of the file, and the copy will be backed up. (I'm also assuming your using the builtin backup utility.) You can also look into other backup software that can handle backing up open files.

I wouldn't recommend kicking all users off there machines for an hour, as it would make for some unhappy users, but it would be effective for solving both your problems.
