I am having a problem on our Exchange 2000 server where the MBDDATA folder is building about 10 gig of log files every weekend and the they disappear on tuesdays. The files are only 5 meg each but there is a whole bunch of them. File name is E0002A13.txt is the first of 2007 txt files.

Log files are wiped out after the entire database is backed up. You would want to keep them until the backup for recovery purposes. Dan

OK so this is why they disappear on tuesday because of monday nites back up. Why are they be created in such a way. This was not happening until a few weeks ago. Can't be normal to have 2,007 txt files that are 5 Meg each. There has go to be some way to stop it.

The log files are monumental to Exchange and are perfectly normal. The log files will continue to grow until the next FULL backup is completed. If your database is not too large and/or you have a fast backup system, you may want to schedule a full backup of the IS every night. That way the database logs get flushed every night also.

I run a full NT backup evey night to disk (partly because it is fast and easier to restore from than tape). Then I backup the NT backup file everynight to tape and follow standard backup policies, etc.

The log files exist to keep Exchange in sync with time sort of. They track changes to the database and keep all consistencies in check. Once Exchange has enough data to write to the log file, it automatically creates a new log file of around 5Mb. So, basically don't worry about them, but don't start deleting them either. A successful restore is not possible without the correct amount.

Hope this helps to shed some light.
