Local Prefixes Match Extension Numbers - Solution? 1

IPO v2 R9.0.4(965), 9508's, and POTS lines. I have a new site where many of the extensions match some of the local prefixes (for example, an extension 221 and a prefix of 221), and the area they're in is a 7-digit dialing area. Thus, when someone picks up the phone to dial a local number, the system rings the extension instead of dialing out.

The site doesn't want to switch to 10-digit dialing, and they don't want to do a wholesale change of extensions. What are my other options? Supposedly one of their sister sites doesn't have this issue and has an older IPO v2 R7.0 with 1416's and line appearances instead of call appearances. Will switching them to line appearances help, do I need to add a short code, change the dial delay count, etc.? I've researched it but am not quite sure of the best approach.

1) Change extns until they don't clash
2) Impose a longer dial delay timer, but this will increase how long it takes to ring extns after you stop dialling
3) Force a dial 9 on them

That's pretty much it

Thank you - My first inclination was to just make them dial a 9, then the local number. I think I can probably talk them into that

Customer is ok with dialing a 9 first, but would like the system to do it for them. Can I just modify the Short Codes in the ARS and add a 9 to the Telephone Number for the codes?

They and you have it wrong, it's not the lines that need a 9 it's the system that needs it to differentiate between internal number and an external call, if the system could do it for them it wouldn't be necessary in the first place

ya was just saying by using ars with 9 or 8 as an access code would make this issue go away, but your most likely right.

As soon as you go off hook the system starts looking at shortcodes (for a ?D or N Dial N shortcode) if none exists dialtone is presented. Anything pressed after that point is checked against extn numbers first (user and group) then shortcodes (user, user rights then system), if you press 201 and that matches extn 201 then that will ring, if 201 is also a valid local dial string like 2011234 for your home or whatever tough (unless you impose dial delay count and lenthen dial delay timer). Having a 9 inserted in ARS will achieve nothing, it will not have reached ARS and even if it had inserting a 9 will result in a failed call as the provider doesn't want a 9. You need to tell the system that it's not an extn so you prefix with a 9 then send it to ARS and strip the 9 this obviously cannot be automated, they need to manually dial the prefix

You can put line appearances on the phone as a fix. If they go off-hook on a line appearance button they can dial directly out as they are accessing the line directly. To call internally, they would go off-hook on a CA button. Obviously, depending upon how many lines they have this may or may not feasable. Or as you state, they might need 1416 phones to accommodate.
