I partitioned off 3GB of my hard drive and I know I need to load the OS to the partition. I am using XP Pro.. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to load this properly? THANKS!
Just select the partition to install XP to when you are in the install procedure, just click on the thing that says choose partition in your case chose the 3GB partition and install win XP on it.
I take it they are both formatted with NTFS??
Yes, they are both NTFS. So, let me see if I get this right... Insert the XP Pro CD and choose to load it on the partioned 3GB drive? It will only install there and leave everything else in tact?
Ah your already installed are you assumed you just had a blank drive.
That complicates things a bit.
Actually i cant help you their i just assumed you were blank and just needed some pointers.
Sorry mate i will have to let the experts like linney and Bcastner take over now
Thank you for all your help! My apologies for not letting you know that the drive I partitioned already has XP Pro loaded on it. I just have a partition now that I don't know where to go with from here. My local is drive C:, my partition is drive E:.
3GB is a bit small to load XP into as the operating system itself will tend to use about 2GB of that. Over time it will tend to expand and require much more space as you use System Restore or load programs etc. The recommended smallest partition (in my opinion) for a self contained working XP Partition would be 8 - 10GB. Although the required minimum size is listed as 1.5GB this would be impracticable in the longer term.
A clean install of the operating system is a much better idea than any upgrade (again, my opinion).
HOW TO: Partition and Format a Hard Disk in Windows XP (Q313348)
I don't see why it'd be a problem if XP's already installed. As long as you make sure you install to the new partition and not in the partition with the existing installation nothing will get overwritten. You may have to mess with your boot.ini file though to make sure you have the option to boot to either installation.
Is there a reason I should load an OS on the partitioned drive? The reason I created the partition is to run two different Access programs on two different drives. So, with that in mind... do I even need to load an OS on the partition?
nope i cant see why you would need the os on 2 drives actually there isnt ! lol no its just another drive sort of thing for you to use only needs to be properly formatted as NTFS and as you have it should be accesiable from inside windows as a drive and it should just be a storage media no need for the OS reinstall
THANK YOU! Do you see any conflict with leaving Office 2000 on my local C: and Office 97 on my partioned E:? Do you think any of the .dll's or .ocx files will conflict?
Is it even possible to install WIN 98, 2000 and XP Pro on a single partitioned hard drive? I have tried doing it using just the OS's built-in routines as well as Partition Magic Pro v8. I can get 98 and XP to work together, 2000 and XP to work together, and 98 and 2000 to work together, but not all 3. HELP!
A single partitioned drive and 3 operating systems, sounds like a recipe for disaster, especially once you start installing programs.
The drive would have to be Fat32, 2 of the operating systems would need to be installed into folders within the 98 windows installation. There would be problems sharing the Program Files folder.
If you had 3 partitions then there would be no problems of the above nature.
Something you could look at would be the recently released Microsoft Virtual PC.
