What are the steps to load NT 4.0 Server on a Compaq desktop. We are having problems when NT ask to load Adapters if the NT machine is set up as a PDC or BDC. We have the drivers but NT does not allow us to install these drivers.

Where is your install failing? Where you able to pick the install volume (\winnt) and see your hard drives?

If you've gotten past this, it's probably your NIC driver that is not being found. You should go back a few screens and look at the screen where is should have auto detected your NIC. Make sure that this is the correct NIC. If not, add the proper drivers here...

Hope this helps.. Joseph L. Poandl

Exactly what kind of problem are you encountering? NIC? HDD controller?

If you have a proprietary driver for the NIC you should be able to tell the system to pick from a list of available drivers, then select "Have Disk" and insert your driver disk.

If you have some sort of proprietary disk controller you would need to install this prior to the default ide/atapi controller-

When the system asks if you want to detect mass storage devices select the option to install third party drivers (make sure you have those drivers on a floppy beforehand). When prompted insert the floppy and it will let you select the driver. When that is done, indicate you want to install another 3rd party driver- when the selection screen comes up use the up arrow to select the IDE/ATAPI driver. After this you should be able to proceed normally.

Do you need it to be a Domain controller, or would standalone server be alright ? Just a thought. Ian

"IF" is not a word it's a way of life

(Ian...you can load NT server on a desktop PC. It doesn't matter if its a DC or just a member server. Both should load fine..assuming its on the HCL.) Joseph L. Poandl
