Hello,
Not too sure if this is the correct forum but I have a PC running windows 98 and have just purchased a new pc that has XP pro already installed. I plan on giving the Win 98 machine to a friend. I want to get all my contacts and other settings from Outlook Express on old machine and load them on the new one. I also would like to do the same with Internet Explorer, bookmarks and so. Also, I have some software and drivers that I want on new machine but don't think I have the original CD's for some. I do have a CD burner if that helps. Can anyone help me out or at least point me towards help? Thank-you very much.

That's not to bad...Outlook Express what you'll want to do, is to go to file/export and export out your contacts and mail. Burn these to a disk and use outlook on the new system to do an import of that information and you'll be good to go.

As for IE favorites, go to ug...Windows\Favorites (I believe, it's been a while, if that's not it just do a search for favorites on your C drive and you'll find it.) and burn that folder to the same CD with your Outlook files. On your XP machine you'll want to copy that favorites folder over to

C:\Documents and Settings\(Your name here)

Just overwrite the current favorites folder and you're favorites will now be saved to your profile.

As for drivers, what drivers? For what devices? You may not need to carry any over XP has a pretty decent library of drivers built in.

Lastly, and this is something I haven't used so perhaps someone else could fill in the blanks on this. XP has a native "settings importer" that may be of some use in simplifying moving of files from one system to another.

aquias, thanks, your suggestions were all good ones.

But, I did forget the drivers backup as you mentioned. There are several tools you can use on a "trial" basis, and I will list some. I generally recommend this one that is freeeware for the last year or so:
This does work well. I tend to collapse the folder stucture it creates into a single folder containing a folder for the actual drivers, and a folder for the .inf files.

Other choices, with "trial" offers:

There are others, I am not trying to be comprehensive here. Let me suggest as part and parcel of your move, that you upgrade any and all drivers for your hardware. There have been a lot of changes due to Service Pack 2 and simply age since your drivers were first installed.

I would:

. run Belarc Advisor and print the results:
. I often use, ignoring the repeated request to subscribe to a service, Driver Detective to identify out of date drivers:

well Thank-you both for the help, the drivers are for a sandisk memory card holder for a digital camera memory card and I also have a scanner, I think I will be able to use the XP drivers or get them from the web.
Well I'm on my way. Thanks again.
