LNK association problem

I had a user associate their LNK files with IE7. Now every application attempts to open in IE. Of course, that causes problems. I thought it would be as simple as unassociating, but I seem to be only able to associate to a different program and not able to remove the association all together. I also started to do a system restore, but there is no restore point for this machine.

I've searched everywhere, but cannot find a solution. Any help will be appreciated.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.lnk

Remove all associations there. What a mess!
