Hi, I've got a client that wants a very large and diverse site. One of the things that they want is the ability of employess and clients to chat live. Is this possible in DW and if so how? Thanks in advance. Frank Cheers~Frank

You are going to need some sort of cgi or php script
and Java to do this. There are company’s that provide
this " Live Advisor" and come to mind.
Bravenet is a free service but you can pay for no banners.
Some hosting company’s proved this service but you will
have to check with them

I use websitecreations.net for web hosting on a number of sites and hosting matters for others... both use solid linux webservers and offer cgi, perl5 and php4 and mySQL so that it is possible to include any number of these abilities. They both also offer canned chatroom functionality with the click of a mouse to set up. On top of that there are several free CGI scripts and PHP scripts for bulletin boards and chatrooms.

All of this interactive type programming is a liitle more advanced than basic html, but if you are going to do this for money you may as well get your feet wet now. When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

for commercial sites a 3rd party service like bravnet is a big NO NO. especially with most free services either going out of business or starting to charge you never know.

2 months after you have been paid for the finished site you wouldn't like to hear a complain " hey live chat stopped working " Ranjan
I earn because I learn

Agree with bluranj...

Free services lack adequate scripting support.. and sites like Tripod even when they charge to eliminate the banners still lack a proper cgi ability, and are dog slow!

Find a local hosting compnay or someone online that has a good reputation (get recommendations) and spend the $$.

Then learn the basics of CGI. My first time with CGI was adding a guestbook and a counter to a basic site. That took me a few hours of perspiration, but taught me the basics. The guestbook and counter are still working on my personal site.

bignosebird.com is an excellent source for learning cgi if you have never done it before, and he provides some graet scripts, too. They are well documented, and with a little reading as you go along, you will be well on your way. When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

fjp476,
There are tons of forum programs out there. You will have to use a forum program in cgi, PHP or asp.
and
are 2 sources to locate programs you need.
After you sift thru all of them, you will need to decide what fits your needs. I ended up getting a program and heavily modified it to fit my needs. I was fortunate to run into an excellent programmer who could help.

As for the chat programs, there are alot of java script programs available, but be aware, some servers are pretty stringent about IRQ programs. Volano makes a pretty good chat program.

pipandpop, save the page that opens when DW is first opened as default.asp

And there's your homepage.
