You can go to Debian mirrors and download free CDROM images. Debian is too hard for most newbies. Visit Mandrakesoft and buy a copy of their product, install, and be amazed.

Try for one site which has info on distributions for sale.
If you buy a distro from a high street store you will pay £30 Plus depending on the distro, version etc.
Which is best / easiest well pays your money but any of the 1st 3 mentioned make life for a newbie as easy as possible.
