Linux and SATA - Which work?

I have a new(er) computer with SATA drives and can't seem to get linux to install. I've tried Open SUSE 10.2, Gentoo and Debian. All fail at some point and I would like to know what I am doing wrong. Windows XP and Vista work just fine out of the box.

I haven't run into a problem with SATA drives and Linux. The new machine I have at home came with a 320GB SATA drive with Vista on it. It now has Kubuntu. I didn't have any trouble. It also has an IDE controller so I have a 250 GB and a 80GB drive. They all work together. My computer at work also has SATA drives in it. It runs on a raid controller which I haven't tried to set up.

One thing you might try is setting the bios to IDE from SATA (or RAID). I believe it emulates IDE drives so the OS is unaware. Another would be to install the controller "driver" during install if you can find it.

Aye, I use OpenSuse 10.2 on my SATA RAID machine. No problems during install.

do you have more information about where the installers are hanging? I've used SATA drives w/stock BIOS settings no problem.

Perhaps you have another hardware detection problem? graphics card?

I ran into the same problem as Franklin. I was installing Unbuntu, and it was starting to install, then it same only a few percentage from the beginning. I have a new loptop, SATA Drive, but I have a spare Drive that is sata 80GB, plebty of space to run unbuntu. Still it failed for unknown reason. I bought the laptop just 2 months ago. 256mb video. Emmmmm

Well, I am running a Nvidia Graphics card and maybe need to tell the kernel about that. I did get a bare bones Gentoo to install but now I need to get the video drivers to keep it running with X. Getting closer!

NVidia drivers are a complex topic, I think you're on the right track now.
