I am looking to implement my first VPN and I amlooking for suitable routers. Would something as basic as a linksys or netgear work or does it have to be a more expensive router?

If you're doing a VPDN (Virtual Private Dialup Network) then yes both Linksys and Netgear both work for this particular type of VPN. I am running a NetGear RT314 for my dial-up VPN and it works perfectly.
