Linking text in Master Pages

I made a new document in Windows. Made the picture and text boxes that I needed in my master pages. When I tried linking the pages to the previous one, it didn't work (this is all in Master Pages). For some reason it won't let me click the linking tool on that icon at the top left of the page that represents the previous page (forgot what it's called). What am I doing wrong? Thanks

Well i couldn't get one thing..... what do you exactly mean by "When I tried linking the pages to the previous one"?

If you could just elaborate it in steps as to what you are doing and how you are doing it, i might be able to work out something.
